The GIS job market is continuing to grow as more industries discover how GIS can benefit them. The increase use of GIS in new markets means the need for educated and skilled employees is also increasing. This project evaluates the job market for a GIS professional in Canada and United States. A database was created from job advertisements found on the Internet. Over a period of four months 1200 jobs were entered into the database. These jobs were not more than four years old with the majority of the jobs being from 2006 and 2007. Only job postings from Canada and the United States were considered for this project. The frequency analysis provided many details on the data that was gathered including how many postings originated from Canada or the USA, as well as the date of these postings. The analysis also identified many areas of high concentration, including Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, California, Texas, and Florida. University graduates with geography, GIS or computer science have a distinct advantage. GIS Analyst was the most referred to job title, with GIS technician second in Canada and GIS developer second in the States. The private sector was the most popular sector for GIS-related jobs, with government the second most. Number of years of experience was present in approximately half of the jobs with the most common being 2 years of experience, and the average salary for the job postings was above $52,000. It is clear from the analysis of the GIS software that it is imperative to learn all aspects of ArcGIS. Older software like ArcView and ArcInfo are also still in use. Other important software packages that may be overlooked by some schools include ArcIMS and ArcSDE. MapInfo Professional represents the best of the other GIS software. Programming skills are very important in the field of GIS as almost half of the postings required them. VB, JavaScript, and ArcObjects were identified as the most important, and other programming skills such as HTML and C++ are still very important. The analysis related to the use of three main database packages including Oracle, Access, and MS SQL. All are very important and knowledge of each is beneficial. Other computer skills that are important include MS Office and AutoCAD. Knowledge of AutoCAD combined with knowledge of GIS would be very marketable. Having knowledge of GPS is a definite asset, especially as GPS units become cheaper and easier to use. A student graduating with all the necessary GIS skills can expect to make a reasonable salary. Because only 328 postings contained a salary figure, the analysis may be slightly inaccurate. However the trend that can be seen is that salary has increased over the years and the higher the education the higher the salary.
